Sanitary Sewer
History - The Village of Minong's sanitary sewer was constructed in 1963. To date the collection system consists of over 6.4 miles of 8" sewer main which conveys wastewater via gravity to the main lift station, located at 200 2nd Ave. Then the wastewater is pumped through an 8" force main 1.7 miles to the treatment plant located northeast of the Village on Greenwood Rd. Collection System - The collection system consists of over 6.4 miles of 8" sewer main which conveys wastewater to the main lift station. Lift Stations - Main lift station, located at 200 2nd Ave. Pumps wastewater through an 8" force main 1.7 miles to the treatment plant northeast of the Village on Greenwood Rd. Treatment Plants - The treatment plant originally consisted of a 5.7 acre stabilization pond as the primary treatment cell which was discharged into a 1.1 acre polishing pond operated on a fill and draw basis. The plant was upgradeed in 1982 with the addition of two aerated treatment cells and two seepage cells. The basic operating principal of aerated ponds is to supply dissolved oxygen to the aerobic bacteria enabling them to consume the organics in the wastewater. The method of aeration is diffused air supplied by three Gardener Denver positive displacment blowers powered by three 50 hp Lincoln electric motors. The air is forced through a maze of piping that run along the bottoms of the cells and is discharged through helixors, which mix the air with the wastewater. There are 67 helixors in aerated cell #1 and 16 in aerated cell #2. The treatment cells are lined with a 30 mil P.V.C membrane, to prevent un-treated wastewater from leeching into the soil eventually contaminating the groundwater. Maintaining an operating depth of 14 feet the cells have a combined capacity of 10.5 million gallons. Treatment cells are operated in series, which means that the raw wastewater enters aerated cell #1. The period that it remains in that cell varies depending on the flow volume. The partially treated wastewater from cell #1 flows through a control manhole into cell #2 where further treatment occurs untill it exits via another control structure and can be diverted to either the old stablization pond or one of the newer seepage cells. The treatment plant was designed to treat an average daily flow of 300,000 gallons and a loading of 1200 lbs. of organic waste per day. In 2001, the average daily flow was 94,700 gallons and the loading was 491 lbs. of organics daily. With a current flow 32% and loading 41% of the design capacity, the treatment plant is quite capable of treating waste from many additional residencies, businesses, as well as industries. Water / Public WorksHistory - The Minong water utility serves 199 residencies, 76 businesses, and one industry. The distribution system, initially constructed in 1971, currently consists of over 10 miles of 6" water main and 92 fire hydrants. Wells - The Villages' water source is groundwater. The original well is 97 feet deep, pumps 425 gpm and is located at 629 Industrial Drive. The second well constructed in 1989 is 100 feet deep, pumps 455 gpm and is located at 720 West Hokah Street. Each well connects to a 10" P.V.C. main that runs directly to the water tower.. Water Tower - The water tower is a 32' high, 30' wide standpipe which holds 165,000 gallons and is located at 125 West South Limits Rd. Water Quality - The Minong Water Utility takes pride in its excellent water quality. With the exception of chlorine and mandated flouride addition, no other treatment is required of its drinking water. The Village routinely monitors its water for bacteria as well as monitoring flouride levels daily to insure optimal leves are maintained. Additional monitoring is required by the Department of Natural Resources anually and the results of these are contained in the Utilities Consumer Confidence Report. The C.C.R. is a notice to inform the utilities customers of what analyses were required, possible health effects of certain contaminates and what levels, if any, were found.
